Automation
The modernized Distribution Automation system is an integrated compnent of the smart-grid system. Distribution
Automation (DA) refers to network of power controls and intelligent devices that enables an electric utility to
remotely monitor and control the power distribution network from a centralized operations center. In a DA system, there
are feeder automation options that include: demand side management (DSM), remote switch control, integrated voltage
control, service restoration, feeder configuration, trouble call, fault location/isolation, load and safety checks.
Communication is the key to getting intelligent Smart Grid devices for remote monitoring and controls.
Distribution Automation systems can communicate via:
• Fiber
• UHF or VHF Radio
• PSTN
• Cellular (GPRS or 3G).
• Microwave, WiFi, Satellite, and any others
For Power Distribution, there are advantages to utilizing the cellular mobile network:
• No need to consider geographic condition, easy for customers to deploy, saves time and construction costs
• Able to withstand harsh EMC circumstances
• IP based, easy deployment and remote management, diagnose and maintenance
• Always online to ensure reliability
• Low communication costs
• Fast transmission speed
• Low power consumption
